Tele2 enters Moscow market

Tele2 Russia, the Russian subsidiary of the Swedish telecommunications group, launched “Cheaper Calls” last week, its first offer to Muscovites. The offer includes discounted calls from the Moscow region, from sea resorts and for calls from abroad.

Intel and Nizhny Novgorod University launched a training center for Intel software support this week. The center will broaden the scope of the university programs and ensure the certification of personnel, particularly in the areas of parallelism, high performance computing and mobile applications, Telecom Daily reported.

MTS to buy Ufanet for $170-$180 million

MTS, a leading Russian mobile operator, intends to purchase Bashkortostan’s telecom operator Ufanet, Russian business daily Kommersant reports. In the fall of 2010 Megafon wanted to buy Ufanet but in the last moment changed decision because of the price of $170-$180 million.

MTS becomes second nationwide GSM operator

MTS, the leading Russian mobile operator based on number of subscribers (71.4 million in 2010), won a tender for GSM frequencies in the Penza region, the last remaining region it had yet to penetrate. Until now, MegaFon was alone in operating GSM networks in all of Russia’s 83 regions.

Megafon to buy St. Petersburg’s Web Plus with $4 million debt

Megafon, a major Russian mobile operator, is considering purchasing St. Petersburg Internet provider Web Plus, Russian business daily Kommersant reports. The deal price has yet to be disclosed, but, according to experts, the price will be “symbolic”, since Web Plus is a loss-making firm with $4 million debt, the newspaper said. The seller is Telecominvest.

Moscow to modernize traffic management

Moscow city authorities have budgeted up to 6.26 billion rubles (approx. $222 million) this year for the creation of an intelligent transportation system that improves traffic management.

Rostelecom to build a $110 million line between Russia and Kaliningrad

National telecom operator Rostelecom is considering building a $110 million submarine communication line between St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad region, reports ComNews.ru, a site specializing in the Russian telecom and IT markets. The company might carry out the project with partner investors or on its own, ComNews.ru says.

Tele2 wins licenses in four new regions; Rostelecom expresses universal ambitions

Tele2 Russia emerged as the main winner in four regional tenders for GSM 1800 licenses in the Russian Far East. It has received from telecommunications regulator Roskomnadzor the right to operate in the Kamchatka, Sakhalin, Koryak, and Chukotka regions and will now operate in 41 Russian regions out of 83.

Rostelecom to build $50 million 4G network in Chuvashia

Russia’s national telecommunications operator Rostelecom intends to develop 4G network in the Republic of Chuvashia, Kommersant reports. Investment in the project has yet to be disclosed but is estimated by experts at $40-$50 million. The network construction is scheduled to start this year.

Dutch fund buys leading digital TV equipment distributor

First Satellite Company, Russia’s leading distributor and retailer of digital TV equipment, announced last week that it has been acquired by Dutch fund Enterprise Emerging Markets Fund B.V.
