VimpelCom begins testing NFC-based payment system in St. Pete subway

As of June 1, VimpelCom, a leading mobile operator in Russia under the Beeline brand, will begin testing their wireless payment system, developed by Ambiq Technologies, in the St. Petersburg subway system. The mobile phone add-on was unveiled two months ago by Ambiq Tech St. Petersburg, the Russian branch of American company Ambiq Technologies.

Rusnano to finance MRAM project with France’s Crocus Technology

Rusnano will finance the first production of MRAM memory chips in Russia in cooperation with Crocus Technology, based in Grenoble, France, the Russian press reported. Production will be organized through a technology transfer of chip design and packaging. The project will focus on producing Secure Digital (SD), MiniSD/MicroSD, and USB 1.1/2.0/3.0 flash memory cards.

Cisco has announced its first product to be manufactured in Russia: an innovative hardware VPN module that will be produced via a multi-level high-tech supply chain using Cisco’s Russian partners. Russian mobile phones to be used for cashless payments

Ambiq Tech St. Petersburg, the Russian branch of American company Ambiq Technologies, yesterday unveiled a mobile phone add-on for Russian customers. Based on Near Field Communication technology, a short-range wireless connectivity standard, the insert allows customers to use their phone as a discount card or a payment instrument linked to their bank account.

Russian Electronics to build $230 million light-diode lamps plant in Tomsk SEZ

Russian Electronics has announced plans to invest $228 million building a plant to produce light-diode lamps in Tomsk region. The plant is reportedly to be located in Tomsk special economic zone (SEZ). Construction of the plant is scheduled to start in May 2011 and last 1.5 years.

Notebooks and tablet PCs to displace desktop PCs on the market

Notebooks and tablet PCs have become more popular than desktop PCs over the past two or three years, Samsung representative Sergei Ilyushin told Kommersant, a Russian business daily. According to him, tablet computers, which entered the mass market only last year, could displace netbooks as early as 2011.
