MTS to buy Ufanet for $170-$180 million

MTS, a leading Russian mobile operator, intends to purchase Bashkortostan’s telecom operator Ufanet, Russian business daily Kommersant reports. In the fall of 2010 Megafon wanted to buy Ufanet but in the last moment changed decision because of the price of $170-$180 million.

Digital multiplex broadcasting to switch to DVB-Т2 standard

The Russian Ministry of Communications and Mass Media is considering switching digital multiplex broadcasting (TV channel packages) over to the DVB-T2 standard, the Russian press reported. The move would free up frequencies for additional content, possibly for use by regional channels.

Former Russian MP to launch new international Russian-language TV channel

Ogoniok, a Russian weekly owned by Kommersant, reported plans to create an international Russian-language TV channel. The project will be managed by Valery Komissarov, a former member of the Russian Duma, who claims to have a background in entertainment television and who announced to the press last month that investors had been found for the project.

First Satellite Company, Russia’s leading distributor and retailer of digital TV equipment, announced last week that it has been acquired by Dutch fund Enterprise Emerging Markets Fund B.V.
