Former Russian MP to launch new international Russian-language TV channel

Ogoniok, a Russian weekly owned by Kommersant, reported plans to create an international Russian-language TV channel. The project will be managed by Valery Komissarov, a former member of the Russian Duma, who claims to have a background in entertainment television and who announced to the press last month that investors had been found for the project.

Russia ranks 77th of 138 countries in IT development

Russia ranks 77th of the 138 countries listed in the latest Networked Readiness Index compiled by the World Economic Forum, up three positions from 80th in the index’s 2009 edition. The index is a component of the Global Information Technology Report published annually by the Forum.

Russian mobile operators actively develop M2M services

The М2М activities of Russia’s three leading mobile operators are developing quickly. At MTS, one of the three operators, M2M-related revenues could grow almost sevenfold in 2011, compared with the previous year, generating 1.7% of the company’s overall revenues, estimates an unnamed internal source. According to this source, that percentage could exceed 3% in 2013.

Notebooks and tablet PCs have become more popular than desktop PCs over the past two or three years, Samsung representative Sergei Ilyushin told Kommersant, a Russian business daily. According to him, tablet computers, which entered the mass market only last year, could displace netbooks as early as 2011.

Only 5% of Russian cardholders use banking cards for online purchases

According to the Public Opinion Foundation (FOM), a leading Russian poll institute, 40% of Russian citizens (46.2 million) hold one or more bank cards, but only 5% of them use their cards for online payments. Among active cardholders the number rises to 18%.
