Yota stops activities in Bielorussia

Scartel, the leading Russian WiMAX and LTE operator operating under the Yota brand, stopped operations in Bielorussia yesterday, just six months after it launch in this country of almost 10 million inhabitants.

Scartel had deployed 38 LTE base stations deployed in Minsk, the capital, and Grodno, a major city.

The company held talks earlier this year with several industry players, but none of them showed interest in Scartel’s assets in Bielorussia, Russian business daily Vedomosti reported.

The company confirmed its intention to focus more on Russia rather than on foreign markets.

This new strategy was previously illustrated in December, when the Russian operator sold its stake in Yota Del Peru. Scartel still operates in Nicaragua, but declined to comment on its plans in this country.
