Russian president Dmitry Medvedev called upon Russian game developers to create “something similar to World of Warcraft” based on Russia’s own national history.
“We should pay more attention to computer games based on history. The majority of them are based on pseudo-history, i.e. fantasy style stories,” the president said. “World of Warcraft, besides its destructive dimension, has a serious background about how human civilization developed.”
Acknowledging World of Warcraft’s worldwide popularity – “tens or even hundreds of millions of players, not only children but also adults, spend hours on it” – and its attractive graphics, Medvedev suggested organizing a contest to create a similar game “at the scale of our country.”
The president’s statements were made last week in Vladimir at a joint session of the Council for Culture and the Arts and the Council for Science, Technology and Education devoted to preparations for celebrating the 1150th anniversary of Russia’s statehood in 2012.
