With 20.6 billion visits to piracy sites in 2017, Russia ranks the second biggest consumer of digital piracy content in the world, suggests a report by Muso, a London-based global authority on digital piracy.
The US tops the list with 27.9 billion visits to piracy sites last year. The listing also includes such countries as India (17 billion), Brazil (12.7 billion), Turkey (11.9 billion), Japan (10.6 billion), France (10.5 billion), Indonesia (10.4 billion), Germany (10.2 billion) and the UK (9.0 billion).
“Piracy is more popular than ever,” comments Andy Chatterley, co-founder and CEO at MUSO. According to the study, global piracy showed a 1.6% increase in 2017, with “300.2 billion visits to piracy websites across music, TV and film, publishing, and software.”
With 106.9 billion visits, TV is recognized “the most regularly consumed pirated content”. It is followed by music (73.9 billion visits) and film (53.2 billion visits).
Muso says it measures piracy from over 30,000 of the highest traffic sites for all formats – including web streaming, download and torrenting – to give “a trend-based view of piracy activity.”
