MAPS.ME, the mapping tool of Mail.ru Group’s subsidiary My.com, has launched bicycle navigation. In addition to indicating hiking and car routes, MAPS.ME takes the terrain into account and determines the most convenient way for a cyclist.
Additionally, MAPS.ME’s car navigation system has been updated with a new layout ands speed data complementing the usual time and route distances. The new version also has a speed-dependent automatic zoom function. The new version is available on App Store and Google Play.
In June, MAPS.ME integrated visualization and booking features for 800,000 hotels, in partnership with Booking.com.
MAPS.ME started in 2011 under the MapsWithMe name with a Lite version for iOS, then in 2012 with an Android version.
The maps and all built-in features like search, bookmarks and route planning fully work offline. The app covers “all the countries and all the cities of the world in one map.”
In 2014 the app, after changing its name to MAPS.ME, was acquired by Mail.Ru group, and LSE-listed Russian Internet group. The mapping app was integrated to the offer of My.com, a group subsidiary seeking to develop a global audience. MAPS.ME was made available for free after this acquisition.
