As reported earlier this week by East-West Digital News, a quirky mobile photo app named ‘Prisma’ has been leading Apple’s App Store ranking in Russia and several neighboring countries since June 20 — just ten days after launch.
Among its millions of users are a bevy of Russian celebrities, from Russian Prime Minister DMitry Medvedev, to supermodels Irina Shayk and Natalya Vodianova, to editor-in-chief of liberal radio station Ekho Moskvy Alexei Venediktov.
What’s more, the app instantly attracted the attention of major investors, including the Mail.ru Group and Gagarin Capital, which have just agreed to invest in Prima’s further developments.
Eva Hartog of the Moscow Times has analyzed the reasons of Prisma’s sudden success and its prospects in Russia and beyond. “While its easy aesthetics has made the app popular with ordinary Russians, Prisma has also excited tech geeks for entirely different reasons,” she writes.
“By simplifying the technology, Prisma has tapped into a market of billions of app users,” she believes.
