LiveJournal.com, a global online community and blogging platform, registered its five millionth Russian-speaking user, according to an announcement made this Monday by SUP, the Russian media company that acquired the platform in 2007.
LiveJournal.com was founded in 1999 by Brad Fitzpatrick, a young American programmer. Since then, it has grown into an open-source service with millions of users worldwide. It was acquired in 2005 by Six Apart, a U.S. blogging software startup, and afterwards by SUP. The company now has its U.S. headquarters in San Francisco, California, and its executive offices in Moscow.
From November 2007 to May 2011, the number of LiveJournal’s Russian-speaking registered users increased by approximately four times.
The average user of LiveJournal’s Russian-speaking segment is a 25-year-old male living in Moscow with a higher education and a middle income. The largest age group consists of 25- to 34-year-olds, differing somewhat from the non-Russian-speaking segment of LiveJournal, which is dominated by 31-year-old users.
LiveJournal is the third largest blogging platform for Russian speakers in terms of traffic. In March 2011, according to TNS, its audience reached 1.44 million unique users between 12 and 54, while LiveInternet, the leader, attracted 9.18 million unique users, followed by the blogging platform of Mail.ru.
