Thin Film Technology has received a grant of $1.9 million from Skolkovo, the international tech hub under completion on the outskirts of Moscow. The firm was founded in 2006, and has been working with the Skolkovo innovation center since 2011. It develops semiconductor sensors for measuring pressure, vibration levels and other physical parameters in unstable and aggressive environments.
The funds will go towards creating new technology for the synthesis of high-precision strain-sensing elements for their sensors. According to the company, its semiconductor elements can currently function at temperatures of up to 200°C, but after the completion of the technology development program at Skolkovo this is should increase to 350°C.
Getting production of their new strain-sensing elements up and running is expected to cost around $2-3 million. Once production starts, their factory will be able to produce batches of 100 and 10,000 sensors.
Thin Film Technology’s ultimate goal is to sell production licences for its product to global sensor manufacturers. The company plans to start selling licences from the end of 2016. In the meantime, it will try to improve the sensors and trial them in Russia, with the collaboration of Rosatom, the state nuclear energy corporation, and state technology corporation Rostec.
