The Russian Post and Rusnano, Russia’s nanotech giant, are working together to apply nanotechnology solutions to postal services, Rusnano announced in late May.
The project involves implementation by the Russian Post of a global monitoring system designed as a turnkey solution by RST-Invent LLC, a Rusnano portfolio company. The system will provide an automatic recorded of domestic and international mail passing through the postal network, using radio frequency identification (RFID) tags.
In addition to supporting the timely delivery of mail, the new system is expected to help automate document handling, create mechanisms for mail flow management, and improve postal logistics. Most importantly, the introduction of RFID tags will ensure that the post reaches its destination safely and quickly, Rusnano pointed out.
The project is scheduled to launch this summer, and by the end of 2014 the system is expected to begin full operations at international postal exchange points such as the airport hubs in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and also at a number of major national and regional sorting offices, transit hubs and mail transportation offices at secondary airports (Vnukovo Logistics Center, Ekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Rostov-on-Don, etc.).
The initiative is part of the Russian Post’s efforts to improve its service – which is widely seen as slow and unreliable.
