Applications open for US-Russia Innovation Corridor

American Councils for International Education announces the opening of the winter 2014 application season for the US-Russia Innovation Corridor (USRIC).

University-based startups and entrepreneurs leading innovative projects and interested in exploring collaborations and accessing incubation services and U.S. networks in their target industries are encouraged to apply.

USRIC services include:

  • Access and guidance to using University of Maryland and State of Maryland programs
  • Data, leads, customary introduction and follow-up communication to develop networking
  • Relationships with researchers, investors, potential clients and partners
  • Expert guidance in business development, networking, financing, marketing
  • Logistical assistance related to travel, business registration, and operations
  • Devoted time of USRIC staff to help navigate resources and access opportunities for the startup on and off campus
  • An activities roadmap and Russian speaking staff to guide progress and decision-making, including updates and recommendations
  • Cost estimates for U.S. business registration or travel to the United States
  • Equipped office space with laptop, wireless internet, telephone, postal address, secretarial services, meeting room, and access to other office services.
  • Analysis of technology and patentability of intellectual property
  • Market evaluation (market size, barriers to entry, competitors, potential partners)
  • Recommendations for funding (venture capital, grants, other programs)

USRIC does not take company equity in exchange for providing resources. Projects at both the early and advanced stage are welcome to participate. Participation length is designed based on the needs of each participant. Residents may work virtually (phone, Skype, email) or physically at MI2. Companies are responsible for all travel and business costs (airfare, housing, application and filing fees, conferences, business and legal services, etc.).

Resident requirements:

  • Free to apply; selected residents pay a one-time participation fee of $100 to demonstrate their commitment
  • A contact person must be designated to direct USRIC efforts and should devote several hours per week to communicate with USRIC staff (in-person, phone, Skype, email)
  • Companies or projects must be ready to actively use the expert resources of USRIC and to take steps toward partnerships
