The Magadan region, also known as Kolyma – a name which evokes Stalin-era Gulag camps for an older generation of Russians – is now looking at a future marked by new levels of innovation activity.
In this region of the Russian Far East, 6,000 km from Moscow, verifiable innovation activity grew 11% last year to a total of $27 million, the news agency RIA Novosti reported, citing a source in the regional administration.
“Innovation products and services accounted for 3.5% of the region’s overall products and services marketed last year,” the report read, citing the primary markets for innovation as the “mining, energy and telecommunications sectors.”
Among the region’s notable innovative research projects are a hydraulic hammer system to enhance mining and increase gold production; a movable complex for medical checkups and the treatment of patient dysfunctions; and biotechnologies for fishing and animal-breeding companies.
