The Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) in Siberia announced last week that a team of students and postgraduates designated WAFT (for We Are From TPU) has developed a project enabling drug-free memory regeneration.
The Total Recall project offers a software-enabled system that helps people with amnesia regain their memory by analyzing the movement pattern of their eye pupils as the patients view a special series of photos.
At the heart of the project, according to team members, is a method of associative thinking in which information to be recalled is tied to other information a patient has retained. Not only does the approach refresh old data in patients’ memories, it allows subjects to learn new data as well.
The system is based on special software designed for “one of the modern platforms” (as yet unspecified). It is assumed to be user-friendly, as all one needs to run the app is a computer and a web camera.
The project has won a place in the Russian final of the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2013, a major international competition for students to be held in Russia for the first time this year.
