Google Russia has moved the better part of its employees out of Russia, reports Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter. These Russian employees “continue to work for Google outside Russia, with a large number ending up in Dubai, where Google has a big office.”
Those who opted to stay in Russia will leave the company, which will “soon have no more employees in Russia,” WSJ learned.
Meanwhile, Google’s Russian subsidiary has initiated a bankruptcy procedure over its inability to pay a $100-million fine for keeping up content Moscow deems illegal, media reported Wednesday.
A Moscow court fined Google 7.2 billion rubles ($113.5 million) in December 2021 for failure to remove content banned in Russia. Google, which tried but failed to appeal the ruling, missed a March 19 deadline to pay the fine.
Since then, following its invasion of Ukraine, Russia has intensified its pressure on Big Tech.
