As three billion people are locked down across the world, an international hackathon is calling innovators to “hack the future so we never go through this again.”
Designed as an emergency response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Global Hack also aims to “build resilience post-pandemic.” The tracks are inspired by the UN sustainability goals that cover the majority of the world’s current and future challenges – from crisis response, to sustainable development, to healthcare as well as work, education, wellness, media, governance and other topics.
“We find ourselves in a unique situation, and are literally all in this together—the entire world is looking for solutions to the same problems at the same time,” say the organizers.
The initiative came from Estonia, with participation from former Estonian president Toomas Hendrik Ilves, Silicon Valley superstar Steve Jurvetson, chess champion Gary Kasparov and other figures. It enjoys support from major European and international institutions.
Teams from Eastern Europe, as well as from all regions of the world, are welcome to participate. They may already join a dedicated Slack community to post and discuss ideas, get feedback and find teammates. Teams should register from April 6 to 8, prior to hackathon start on April 9. An online demos and awards event will take place on April 20.
