Digital Science, a UK-based global company which provides researchers, institutions, funders and government bodies with tech tools to work more efficiently, is announcing the creation of a subsidiary company in Russia. A Russian-language website has been made available.
Headed by Dr. Igor Osipov, the subsidiary will be responsible for driving growth in Russia and in neighboring countries including Kazakhstan, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Armenia and others.
Digital Science invests in businesses that complement its ecosystem of services in the research and scientific services space. The company also funds and develops online products and services to empower researchers to be more efficient.
Digital Science’s Russian branch will focus on deepening the relationships with universities, funders and government organizations. Focus will be made on Dimensions, a product offered by Digital Science portfolio company ÜberResearch. This solution allows researchers to analyze “more than $1.1 trillion of research funding from 250 funders,” according to the company.
The Russian activities will also involve Altmetric, another portfolio company, which tracks online attention and measures the engagement relating to individual publications.
Digital Science will also look to introduce its laboratory software products and authoring tools to the Russian and neighboring markets “in the very near future.”
Localizing best global practices
“Today’s announcement is an important development for us as we establish our footprint in Russia,” said Digital Science CEO Dr. Daniel Hook.
“Dr. Osipov’s experience both internationally and in Russia; his work with the University of the Arctic; his understanding of research metrics, as well as his hands-on experience as a university researcher make him uniquely qualified to take Digital Science into Russia at a time when the country is fundamentally reforming and investing in its research infrastructure. Concurrently, Dr. Osipov has been appointed as VP Academic and Government to provide research metrics and Dimensions expertise and support across Europe and EMEA funder and government sectors,” Hook added.
“Currently the Russian research and scientific institutions aim to enhance their international reputation by localizing best global practices, increasing research activity, and accelerating internationalization efforts. We see new world-class university research centers attract students and faculty, increase their scholarly collaboration, and participating in joint programs with partners abroad,” Dr. Osipov noted.
“Digital Science’s portfolio of open science and cloud-based technology solutions [will help] the Russian & CIS research community efforts to further raise its global profile,” he claims.
So far Digital Science, a property of the Holtzbrinck Publishing Group, had only offices in London and Boston.
