Russia, Finland discuss joint Arctic telecom projects

Several fields of potential cooperation in the Artic were discussed last week by Russia’s Deputy Telecom and Mass Communications Minister Rashid Ismailov and Finnish Transport and Communications Minister Anne Berner on the margins of Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress.

According to a statement from the Russian ministry, the two countries may cooperate on metadata, frequency coordination and supervision in the border areas as well as in 5G projects.

The Russian minister also discussed ICT development with Günther Oettinger, the EU Commissioner on Digital Economy & Society. The two sides decided to resume dialog in this field at the expert level, according to Russian news agency TASS.

Russia and the European Union will also share experience in the fields of broadband development, e-government and digital market unification.

The congress also provided Ismailov with an opportunity to meet Hamadoun Touré, recently appointed executive director of Smart Africa, and ITU Secretary General Houlin Zhao.
