The new Google icon was largely inspired by the work of Russian designer Denis Kortunov, US online publication Daily Tech revealed last week.
Back in 2008 Kortunov was among a handful of designers to try their hand at a reimagining of Google’s visual identity. It is immediately apparent that the 2015 Google icon is a only “minimally tweaked derivative of Kortunov’s second cut,” noted the Daily Tech.
In an exchange with Russian tech blog VC.ru, Kortunov confirmed that he agreed with Google on the use of his work by the company. Google itself approached him, he said.
Kortunov added that he does not want to disclose details of the agreement with Google. He also declined to answer a question about the reasons for removing the original notes with design variations for Google.
Google representatives did not respond to a request for information about the company’s collaboration with Kortunov.
