Russian Internet users are most often females, young, and live in western Russia

Among the adult Russian Internet population the prevailing groups are women, individuals younger than 35 years of age and inhabitants of western federal districts of Russia. Over one-third of Russian Internet users have vocational education – according to analysis made by international Internet data provider Gemius in July 2014.

Research shows that every fourth member of the online audience in Poland is between 25 and 34 years old. Also, one in four Internet users holds secondary education, and one in five – higher. Here are the main characteristics of the Russian users.

  • Russian Internet feminized

The Russian Internet consists of around 70 million users. Within this group, women amount to 37.6 million (54% of the online audience). There are fewer men, by around 5 million (32.5 million males in total).

  • More than half of all Internet users are below 35 years old

Furthermore, the research project gemiusAudience shows that every third Russian Internet user falls in the age group of 25 to 34 years old (21 million persons). One in five Russian Internet users are between 18 and 24 years old (14.9 million) or aged from 35 to 44 years old (15.3 million), while every sixth is aged 45 to 54 (11.1 million). The least numerous group to visit Russian-language websites is made up of those older than 55 (over 7.6 million).

  • Most Russian Internet users live in western Russia

The Internet population across the Russian territory is distributedunevenly. The majority of users come from the Central Federal District (19.8 million, out of which 7.3 million in Moscow), and every sixth user of the Russian-speaking Internet lives in the Volga Federal District (11 million) or in the Northwestern Federal District (10 million).

  • Vocational school graduates most prevalent

The Internet population is also diversified in terms of the level of education. More than one-third of users are vocational school graduates (25 million) and slightly fewer hold higher education diplomas (22 million). Over a quarter of Russian Internet users have secondary education (18.5 million). Among the Russian online audience, the smallest groups are made up of persons who have not yet finished their academic training (3 million) or secondary school (1.4 million).

The data quoted originates from an international project (gemiusAudience) conducted by Gemius in more than 30 countries. It aims to research into the number and demographic profile of Internet users and the manner in which they utilize the web. The study is performed according to Gemius proprietary hybrid methodology and in accordance with the ICC/ESOMAR international code of conduct.
