Russian Superconductor, a company set up to promote the superconductor segment in Russia, is expected in the next few months to launch the pilot production of next-gen high-temperature superconductors at the Kurchatov Institute in Moscow, the Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported, citing head of the Kurchatov Superconductivity Center Vitaly Kruglov.
According to a range of experts, using superconductors in an array of economic sectors will help Russia save “billions of rubles” a year through a decrease in equipment malfunctioning rates.
The 100-meter-long experimental production line to make the high-temperature superconductors has been assembled at the Kurchatov Institute National Research Center as part of a broader project the institute is pushing in partnership with the St. Petersburg-based Efremov Research Institute of Electrophysical Equipment. The project is aimed at developing a new competitive superconductor-based industrial technology to be then test-run at TVEL, the nuclear fuel company set up by Russia’s nuclear energy authority.
