Russian localization solution developer wins Smart House EvAAL-2013

RTL-Service, a Moscow-headquartered developer of wireless networking and location systems, came out on top last month at the Smart House EvAAL-2013 technology competition in Europe with its RealTrac data transmission and object localization solution.

In an exchange with CNews.ru, the company explained that the winning technology enables the pinpointing of mobile objects both outdoors and indoors.

To determine a location, the system is said to use an array of parameters, including the time of electromagnetic wave propagation between a ground-based relay station and a mobile radio center, the strength of a signal, measurements from pressure and acceleration sensors and gyroscopes and even the shape of a building.

At the heart of the technology is what RTL-Service claims is its proprietary newest set of algorithms for tracking movement trajectories by integrating data from a motion analyzer with that of radio measurements and contextual information.

In a series of rigorous tests, the RealTrac outstripped other Smart House EvAAL-2013 contenders from Germany, Spain, France, Portugal, Italy, Slovenia, Romania and Japan.

The competition was held in two stages between July and September 2013. AmbiTrick, a project of Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research, came in second, while IPNLas of the Institute Pedro Nunes in Portugal walked away with third place.

A project of the AALOA association, the EvAAL international contest aims at increasing the research and developer communities’ interest in Ambient Assisted Living(AAL) technologies. These refer to intelligent systems of assistance for a healthier and safer life in the preferred living environment, particularly for the elderly or ill persons.
