Yandex updates its personalized search feature to track users’ momentary interests

The Russian search giant Yandex has announced an updated version of its Personal Search feature in the newly-launched search platform “Dublin.” The main difference from the previous version, introduced in December 2012, is that now a user’s search profile is updated every few seconds instead of once a day.

Yandex claims that more than a half of all search queries is dictated by fleeting interests — those that appear and fade in a matter of minutes. Now the search giant can track and take such short-term interests into account, analyzing the current user’s search session to bring more relevant results.

For instance, if a user has just searched for something cinema-related, for his following query, “Harry Potter,” the search engine will display results about the series of movies ahead of those for the books.

Yandex’s personalized search feature was launched in December and was said to be able to “improve the quality of search results for about 75-80% of search queries.”
