The Internet Society (ISOC), a US-based non-profit organization that promotes Internet-related standards, education and policy, has opened its Russia Chapter to guide experts in the development and implementation of problem-solving strategies for the Russian Internet.
In an interview with the news agency RIA Novosti, Sergei Sharikov, the CEO of Webnames.ru, a Russian domain name registry and one of the ISOC Russia Chapter champions, said that “ISOC Russia Chapter has opened to assist in addressing vital issues in the development of Russian Internet technology, web-based IP protection, the promotion of webinars and conferences, and other things.”
ISOC Russia Chapter is registered in Russia as The Internet Society, a Russian non-profit legal entity. From its inception, it will focus on developing root domains in a variety of languages spoken in Russia, and on putting together emailing tools tailored to those languages. Another of its stated objectives is to attempt the harmonization of Internet-related legislation.
Membership in ISOC Russia Chapter is open to any Russian entity or individual.
The U.S.’ Internet Society has established more than 90 national Chapters since its start in 1992. Russia is following in the footsteps of its closest former USSR neighbors, including Armenia, Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Estonia, and Kazakhstan, which have already joined the Society.
