The roll out of 4G in Russia, which started last year in Novosibirsk, Moscow, and a few other privileged urban areas, is now reaching the country’s remote regions. Last week, MegaFon, a major Russia mobile operator, announced the launch of an LTE network throughout the Republic of South Ossetia.
Located in the Caucasus region, South Ossetia used to be a part of Georgia, a former Soviet republic, before joining the Russian Federation as a consequence of the military conflict between Russia and Georgia in 2008.
In uncovered or poorly covered areas, MegaFon’s 4G subscribers will be automatically redirected to the operator’s existing 3G and 2G networks (UMTS and GSM, respectively) throughout the Republic.
