MTS to become satellite TV operator?

MTS, a leading Russian mobile operator and retailer, is rumored to be eyeing diversification opportunities in the satellite TV business.

Unnamed sources with purported knowledge of the firm’s plans leaked to the Russian news agency RIA Novosti that MTS has ostensibly acquired five satellite-mounted transponders and is also issuing tenders seeking 3G-supporting subscriber equipment. China’s Coship Electronics has been alluded to as being among the most likely suppliers.

The would-be satellite TV operator may launch its new service in the third quarter of 2013, one of the anonymous sources said. Another source suggested that MTS might opt for TV distribution, using satellite capabilities to transmit a signal to third-party networks.

So far, MTS has neither confirmed nor denied any of the rumored diversification plans.
