CERN physicists to benefit from Yandex’s machine learning solution

Yandex, Russia’s search giant, announced earlier this week that it is now an associate member of the Open Lab of CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research.

Under the terms of the recently signed agreement, CERN researchers will be able to tap into Yandex’s computing capabilities and data processing technologies. In exchange, the Russian company will get broader access to the results of CERN experiments for further improvements of its own technologies.

CERN is said to have already begun using MatrixNet, Yandex’s flagship machine learning solution, to analyze the decay of unstable subatomic particles called mesons. Wider applications are envisioned as the European researchers hope to get enough training and IT tools from Yandex to run the powerful machine learning system all on their own.

The Russian firm began to collaborate with CERN back in 2011. In April 2012, Yandex offered the scientists its search service for retrieving data on operations at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world’s largest particle accelerator.
