Earlier this month, Gvidi, a mobile app dedicated to restaurants, cafés and bars across Russia and neighboring countries, achieved the number one ranking in the Food and Drinks category of the Russian language App Store just “hours” after its release, and has remained among the fifteen most popular free iOS apps.
Gvidi is a “smart” helper that “already knows your interests and gastronomical preferences,” claims its publisher AlterGeo, the largest Foursquare-like geo-social network in Russia and neighboring countries.
With its sophisticated collaborative filtering algorithms, the app takes users’ open personal information shared on social networks into account in order to provide users with customized recommendations. The recommendations cover restaurants, cafés or bars each user would likely enjoy based on collected data. The user can weigh up options right in the app, which also offers discounts.
As Gvidi was enjoying its leadership, AlterGeo was selected as a finalist for the prestigious Red Herring Top 100 Global technology award. The winners will be announced on November 29 in Los Angeles.
