Obninsk to launch $40 million hi-tech technopark

Obninsk, a ‘science city’ in the Kaluga region, announced plans to build its own $40 million high tech technopark. The effort will be funded on a roughly 50/50 basis between federal and regional coffers, the Nanoprom.ru portal reported earlier this week.

The future technopark will reportedly focus on biotechechnology and pharmaceuticals, nanotechnology, nuclear power technology, nuclear medicine, IT, and new materials.

The technopark will have two sites with a total area of 51.5 hectares to accommodate a business incubator; space for IT, nanotech and new materials R&D companies; an administrative building; and a group of biotech companies and pharma production facilities.

“At the moment, the [Obninsk] science city has all the prerequisites for creating a full-cycle biotech and pharma commercialization mechanism, from scientific specimens and clinical trials to the commercial production of end user pharmaceutical products,” a spokesman for the regional administration said.
