Russian software publisher ABBYY acquires US VAR Digital Documents

Abbyy, a Moscow-headquartered global provider of document recognition, data capture and linguistic technologies and services, announced last week it has acquired Digital Documents, a California-based value-added reseller (VAR) and systems integrator.

Digital Documents provides with document capture, recognition and retrieval technologies for the healthcare, education, government, financial services and retail markets. The company claims it serves hundreds of active clients across North America.

“Digital Documents has maintained a longstanding relationship with ABBYY USA and our two organizations share a commitment to furthering the use of data capture technology across industries,” said Dean Tang, president and CEO of ABBYY USA. “With this acquisition, ABBYY is both augmenting vertical market expertise and bolstering existing VAR programs to help increase the distribution of our solutions in the U.S. and Canada. By leveraging Digital Documents’ experience in the marketplace, we will be better able to anticipate and serve the needs of our valued VAR Partners.”

The acquisition might have cost ABBYY from $20 to $40 million, Finam Global analyst Nelly Matveyeva told RIA Novosti. According to her, ABBYY is, first of all, interested in the US company’s client base,” she said.

“In addition, Digital Documents’ services will soon start being in demand beyond the American market,” she added.

In August, the Russian company acquired Connective Language Services, a US provider of translation software and services.
