MTS, a major Russian mobile operator, has made digital TV available in 150 cities across Russia. It is expected that, due to the new digital platforms, the number of TV channels including HD will grow by more than 60%, and diverse interactive services will be launched.
At the moment, MTS Digital TV platform provides 118 TV channels, consisting of its basic services and six different themed packages. MTS plans to increase the number of TV channels up to 140 as well as expand the geographical penetration of its digital TV offerings by the end of 2012. The operator expects to complete the transition of all of its subscribers to a digital platform by 2014.
MTS reports that it currently has around 3 million pay TV subscribers. The cost of a subscription for their basic package starts at 99 rubles per month (around $3).
