Intel Software, an Intel subsidiary and a new Skolkovo resident, has announced plans to develop an intelligent automotive system supported by ERA-GLONASS-based open software platform services.
The endeavor calls for the development of a hardware-software solution integrating ERA-GLONASS, a real-time satellite-based infrastructure service that takes full advantage of Russia’s GLONASS satellite positioning system and was designed to aid response to traffic accidents. In addition to the navigation system, users will reportedly also have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for higher road security and comfort, and will easily be able to access social networks, video content and more.
According to William Savage, an Intel vice-president, the platform is based on an open source Tizen-compatible operating system, which has been adopted as an industry standard by the GENIVI automakers alliance.
ERA-GLONASS VDUs will be pre-installed on all new cars in Russia, enabling quick emergency alerts and hopefully lowering the death toll in traffic accidents. The ERA-GLONASS project is expected to be up and running across Russia by March 1, 2014 and prevent an estimated 4,000 deaths a year.
Compared to GPS-only solutions, the combined access to GPS+GLONASS signals offers improved performance of location-based services.
