M2M Telematics, the leading Russian vehicle telematics solution provider, announced last week it has developed a distant control and surveillance system for hazardous freight transportation using GLONASS, the Russian satellite navigation system.
The hazardous transportation solution, which had been ordered by the Federal Transport Supervision Service (FTSS) of the Ministry of Transport, was developed in partnership with NIS GLONASS, the Russian national provider of satellite navigation services.
According to M2M Telematics, there are over 300,000 hazardous freight transport vehicles registered in Russia.
Currently, oversight of these vehicles is provided by stationary or mobile technical surveillance stations and road police posts. But earlier this year, the FTSS issued new regulations requiring all vehicles transporting hazardous cargos to be equipped with GLONASS or GLONASS+GPS navigation systems.
