Crocus to integrate IBM tech to semiconductor production in Russia

Crocus Technology, a leading developer of magnetic memory technology based in Grenoble, France, announced yesterday a joint technology development agreement and a patent license agreement with IBM to integrate magnetic technology into semiconductor products.

Crocus and IBM will jointly develop semiconductor technology that combines Crocus’s thermally assisted next generation Magnetic Logic Unit  (MLU) technology with IBM’s magneto-resistive random access memory (MRAM) technology and processing capabilities, according to the press release.

Crocus announced earlier this year that its manufacturing capacities will be transfered to Kaliningrad, Russia, in partnership with Russian nanotechnology giant Rusnano and satellite TV system maker General Satellite. The construction of the new plant will start in Q1 2012 and should take a year.

“The agreement between Crocus and IBM confirms we made the right choice with the TAS MRAM technology developed by Crocus,” commented Rusnano Chairman Anatoloy Chubais in an exchange with news agency RIA Novosti. “This technology will allow Russia to become a leader in new, cutting-edge technology segments.”
