Svyaznoy to launch IPTV offer by the end of the year

Mobile phone retailer Svyaznoy is preparing to launch an IPTV offer by the end of the year, ComNews.ru, a Russian business news site covering telecom and IT issues, reported earlier this month.

Svyaznoy intends to buy console decoders from a leading vendor and operate its over-the-top broadcasting project independently from any existing IPTV operators. Other details of the project will be disclosed later this year.

This announcement seems in line with Svyaznoy’s new, Internet-oriented business strategy. Last June, the company announced it will launch its own music portal.

Svyaznoy’s decision to enter the digital TV market may also be linked to its IPO plans.

Svyaznoy is Russia’s second largest mobile phone retailer. It operates some 2,300 retail outlets throughout the country.
