The Moscow State Automobile and Road Technical University (MADI) and the Scientific Center for Complex Transportation Problems of the Ministry of Transport have reached an agreement with IBM for the creation of an academic competence center dedicated to IBM solutions in the area of intelligent transportation systems.
“Many of the tasks of the competence center are of strategic importance to the development of Russia’s transportation systems,” said Oleg Yevseyev of the Ministry of Transport. The center will “take part in defining the country’s strategy for intelligent transportation systems and contribute to form the expertise required for further legislation.”
“Using the analytical capacities of a supercomputer like Watson can help with the realization of more optimal decisions regarding bus schedules and routes that are dependant on constantly evolving traffic patterns, for example,” said Marat Guriev, State program director at IBM Russia. .
Over the last 15 years Moscow has become one of the most congested cities in the world. A 2009 study by MADI estimated the economic losses related to traffic jams in the city at 40 billion rubles, or $1.3 billion.
