Rostelecom inks deal to link Europe with Mideast

Russia and Iran have agreed to build a high-speed telecommunications cable linking Europe to Persia, signing the deal on Wednesday during a visit to Iran by Russian Minister of Communications and Mass Media Igor Shchegolev. The information superhighway will start in Oman, pass through Iran and Russia, and end in Germany. The line may eventually be extended to India.

As announced previously, the line will be operated by Russian national telecom operator Rostelecom, the UK’s Cable & Wireless, Iran’s Telecommunications Infrastructure Company (TIC), and Oman’s Omantel. According to the terms of the agreement, Cable & Wireless will construct a cable highway connecting Europe to Ukraine as far as the Russian border.

Rostelecom will be responsible for the connection from the Russian-Ukrainian border through Azerbaijan, up to the border with Iran. From the Iranian border, TIC will extend the highway to the Persian Gulf, where Omantel is to complete the connection to Oman.
