Parallels Research gets Skolkovo grant for cloud development

Parallels Research, an international research center owned by Parallels, announced last week it has received a 150 million ruble grant ($5.3 million) from the Skolkovo Foundation for cloud computing research and development. The research center will get another 150 million rubles from its parent company Parallels.

Founded by Sergey Belousov in 1999, Parallels has become an internationally renowned publisher of computer optimization, virtualization and automation software. Its subsidiary Parallels Research became a Skolkovo resident in March, 2011.

The state-sponsored Skolkovo Foundation is an ambitious project to build a world-class innovation hub near Moscow.

The financing will support the research center in the development of a program platform for private and public ‘clouds’ that offer considerably lower operational expenses than existing technologies.  Funds will be directed to hiring developers and equipment purchases.

At the end of February, 2011 Skolkovo also gave a  grant of 450 million rubles to Abbyy, a Russian maker of linguistic software and document conversion software (OCR) and document recognition software (ICR).
