GLONASS pursues expansion on India’s market

During a visit to New Delhi last week, a top-level delegation of NIS GLONASS, Russia’s national provider of satellite-based navigation services, exchanged opinions with DIMTS, an urban transport and infrastructure services company backed by the Delhi government, about implementing intelligent transportation systems in Russian and Indian cities as well as about furthering commercial development.

The news was reported by ICT-Online, a Russian site covering IT and telecom issues.

In November 2010, the two organizations created a consortium to bid in tenders for traffic management solutions in major Indian cities.

During the same period, NIS GLONASS signed a 50-50 joint venture agreement with Antrix Corporation, the marketing arm of the Indian Space Research Organization, to promote NIS satellite-based operator services to the Indian police and to forestry and private logistics businesses.

In August 2010, NIS GLONASS signed its first contract with HBL Power Systems, a major Indian manufacturer of batteries and standby power offerings, to deliver satellite navigation solutions for India’s police and for its rail systems.

In March 2011, the Russian Ministry of Economic Development pledged to help NIS GLONASS find foreign partners in an effort to mobilize Russia’s commercial representations in India, Latin America, the Middle East, and the former Soviet republics.
