Rostelecom, Russia’s national telecommunications operator, together with Russian Radio Broadcasting Network (RRBN) signed a cooperation agreement to organize the terrestrial transmission of digital content to the RRBN transmitters across the country, thus enabling the broadcasting of eight federal TV channels (Channel One, Channel Two Russia, Russia-24, Channel 5 – St. Petersburg, Sport, Russia-K, NTV, and Carousel) and one local channel.
The agreement was signed on May 10 during Sviaz-Expocomm – 2011, the 23rd International Exhibition of Information Technologies and Communication Services in Moscow.
Minister of Communications and Mass Media lgor Shchegolev hailed this agreement as “addressing the nationally important task of delivering television signals” in a reliable way. The project will contribute to developing a national communications infrastructure and will modernize telecommunication solutions in Russia, he said.
Content transmission will go through Rostelecom’s backbone network. In the first phase of the project, the signal will be delivered to the RRBN stations only in the European part of the country. In the future, all of RRBN’s 2000 transmitters across Russia will be connected.
