Twitter officially launched new Russian and Turkish language versions of its web and mobile interfaces on Tuesday.
The microblogging service launched in the US in 2006 only started to gain notice and popularity in Russia about two years ago.
Twitter aims to increase its user base in Russia, a country where mobile Internet penetration has increased considerably over the last two years, but where many have little familiarity with English.
However, reactions were not unanimously positive, the Russian press reports. Some criticized poor translations, while others found the Russian version less fluid than the original English one.
CNews.ru, a site covering IT and telecom issues, appeared to take slight umbrage at the fact that “Twitter equated Russian to Turkish.”
The Russian press also reported rumors that Twitter might open a representative office in Russia.
