Digital multiplex broadcasting to switch to DVB-Т2 standard

The Russian Ministry of Communications and Mass Media is considering switching digital multiplex broadcasting (TV channel packages) over to the DVB-T2 standard, the Russian press reported.

The move would free up frequencies for additional content, possibly for use by regional channels.

To test the DVB-T2 standard, pilot zones will be created in major Russian cities. The final decision on whether to adopt the new standard could be made as soon as the end of 2011.

In May 2009, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a law creating the first multiplex of public television and radio channels nationwide. A tender for joining the second multiplex is scheduled for the second half of 2011. Seventeen channels have already announced their intention to bid on the nine available slots.
