Rostelecom, Russia’s national telecommunications operator, intends to invest $15.3 million in the development of telecommunications networks in Tomsk region in 2011, up 34.4% from 2010, news agency RIA Novosti reports.
The funds are to be used to expand the company’s data transfer and broadband Internet access network, as well as build high-speed 5-Gbyte fiber optic network in the region.
Rostelecom also announced plans to invest over $9 million to modernize the telecommunications infrastructure in the Republic of Karelia by the end of 2011.
Under plans, specifically, the company is to build passive optic-fiber network (PON), which allows to provide a single service package, including digital telephony, high-speed Internet and IP TV.
