Pirate Party denied official registration; case to be brought to court

The Ministry of Justice denied registration to the Pirate Party of Russia because the word “piracy,” in accordance with applicable law, is defined as an attack against ships at sea or on rivers and represents a criminal offense.

“This denial offends 15 thousand members of the party, who were called criminals by the Ministry of Justice,” said Pavel Rassudov, chairman of the Pirate Party. The party’s site says that its representatives have brought an application to the Zamoskvoretsky court.

Under the motto “Copy everything!”, Russia’s Pirate Party claims to “represent and defend the rights of internet users” and to promote “non-commercial information exchanges” on the internet.

Founded in July 2009, the Pirate Party of Russia is affiliated with Pirate Parties International.
