Android’s smartphone share increased 10-fold; Mobile phone retailer to open dedicated departments

Mobile phone retailer Svyaznoy announced the imminent opening of a department dedicated to Android-supported devices in one of its Moscow outlets. Such departments may appear in other Svyaznoy stores in Moscow and Russian regions as well.

The reason behind the move is simple: between 2009 and 2010, the share of Android-supported smartphone sales has increased 10-fold for Svyaznoz, from 1% to 10%.

Penetration of the Android operating system in Russia has been fast-paced. Until last September, when paid Android applications first appeared on the Russian market, free applications were all that were available to Russian users.
