Ten licenses for GSM in 1800 MHz standard are to be offered in Kamchatka, the Koryak District, the Chukotka Autonomous District and the Sakhalin Region. Applications for participation have been filled out by seven companies, including leading mobile operators VimpelCom and MegaFon, as well as New Telephone Company (NTC), Tele2 (from Siberia and Chelyabinsk, Ural) and Rostelecom, Russia’s national telecommunications operator.
Tele2 provides services in 37 regions of Russia, but is not represented in the Far East, as opposed to VimpelCom, which has GSM-licenses in Kamchatka and the Sakhalin Region. MTS, another leading operator, is not participating in the competition, says company spokeswoman Irina Osadchaya, because it already has a sufficient frequency resource in the declared areas.
