Russia’s top 30 online retailers revealed

This year, East-West Digital News has teamed up with Data Insight and Enter Vision, two leading Russian e-commerce data providers, to provide Russia’s first reliable ranking of e-commerce companies.

The information is based on companies’ official data and – whenever company data was not disclosed or judged inaccurate – the combined expert assessments of Data Insight, East-West Digital News and Enter Vision. The methodology has been harmonized with that of InternetRetailer.com, a leading US industry publication, which has used a large part of the data to complete its 2014 Top 500 Europe Retailers.

The rankings are based on 2013 online sales, taking only companies’ online revenue into account and disregarding other sales channels.

Key findings:

  • The total revenue received through Internet trade of the Top 30 players on the Russian e-commerce market in 2013 was more than 180 billion rubles (approximately $5.65 billion).
  • Among the Top 30 Internet retailers, 14 companies specialize mainly in sales of household appliances and electronics, 6 in clothing and footwear, and 7 retailers offer a mix (household appliances and electronics, housewares, children’s goods, DIY and other categories), while 3 companies are in other categories – 2 in DIY and 1 in auto parts.
  • Even when considered as groups of companies, rather than individual stores, only 8 retailers generate more than 10 billion rubles (approximately $314 million) through online sales. They are Ulmart.ru, Svyaznoy.ru + Enter.ru, Otto Group (otto.ru, bonprix.ru, quelle.ru and others), Wildberries.ru, Citilink.ru, Exist.ru, Ozon.ru + Sapato.ru and IQ One Group (e96.ru + sotmarket.ru + utinet.ru). Those companies’ combined net revenue made up 64% of all sales of the Top 25 market players.
  • The sites with the most unique visitors in 2013 were Wildberries.ru, MVideo.ru, Ozon.ru, Svyaznoy.ru and Ulmart.ru.

Russia’s online retail market reached $16.5 billion last year (up nearly 30% from 2012), not including hotel bookings and tours ($2 billion) and cross-border trade of physical goods (nearly $3 billion).
